The tall, elegant black woman known as “Star” saw the number on her cell phone on the passenger seat next to her. It had no name attached, but she knew who it was.

Star was an up-and-comer within an organization of contract killers loosely but appropriately called the Department of Murder.

A former aspiring actress from Los Angeles, Star fell into her profession thanks to a stunt woman she’d met on a job. That woman had helped train her for a martial arts movie, and in the process, shared a side hustle.

Killing people for money.

Like the guy in the trunk.

Star drove a black Cadillac and now, she exited the freeway and talked to a go-between who represented another shady organization known as the Zurich Collective.

More accurately, a woman named Gunnella Bohm.

Star listened and didn’t hesitate. The number being offered had an extra zero compared to most of her jobs and that kind of money was something she had never even dreamed was possible.

Yes, she would take the job, and yes, she could start right away.

After agreeing to look at the details as soon as she was able, Star disconnected the call and drove straight out to the desert, past a closed road and down a flat valley she’d used before.

Hidden from view, she pulled the Cadillac over and popped the trunk.

The dead man was wrapped in a ten-thousand-dollar Persian carpet. It was a damn fine carpet and Star had considered keeping it, but there was simply too much blood.

The dead man was a Hollywood producer who’d scammed some Mob guys and thought he was too rich and powerful to be taken out.

He had figured wrong.

Star grabbed the ropes she’d used to roll up the producer’s body and heaved it from the Cadillac. She dragged the parcel to the lip of a narrow crevice. It was merely twenty yards long but very deep and the opening was barely a foot wide. Just enough room to slide through a body.

The crevice was impossible to see from above and there was no way to get to the bottom – save bringing out some heavy duty earth moving vehicles and trench the whole thing wider and why would anyone want to do that? She always stripped her targets of any and all technology so unless someone had a GPS tracker on her or her car, there was no need to worry about discovery.

With the producer deeply immersed in his new role, Star got back in the Caddy and connected her phone’s music player via Bluetooth.

Up on her playlist was the Rolling Stones.

Let It Bleed.

You bet I will, she thought.
